Since 2008 Let’s Circus has been committed to supporting the ongoing work of The Sarakasi Trust in Nairobi, Kenya. Sarakasi exists to support circus artists, acrobats and young people in Nairobi. The Trust manages a suite of programmes that engage a diverse community and provides access to positive social development and education.
In 2009 and 2012, Let’s Circus undertook residencies in Kenya, and provided artist development, teacher training and social circus outreach projects for professionals and community participants. These residencies passed on artistic skills in new disciplines, helped artists become social circus trainers, created new performance collaborations and delivered outreach activities to projects in hospitals, schools, prisons, rural communities and slum areas.
Between 2008 and 2015 Let’s Circus has continued to support the work of the Sarakasi Trust through regular fundraising activities. In this time, over $16 000 has been donated, allowing Sarakasi to continue it’s outreach program across Nairobi. A large proportion of this has come from a single annual event ‘The Backyard Cabaret’, proving the charity really does begin at home.
Helping to support the Sarakasi Trust in the delivery of it’s aims will continue to be an activity of Let’s Circus. We consider the gift of opportunity to be the greatest thing we can give.
