Initiated by Let’s Circus in 2008, Circadium is the identity name for a large-scale temporary circus venue that provides free public access to a large variety of circus arts tuition. The experience to the public is designed as a ‘stadium of circus training’, where typically, classes take place in diverse disciplines – everything from acrobatics to juggling, clowning to aerial dance. The venue is a place to be and not just see circus. Where beginners and professionals work side by side to share, train, learn and play.
Circadia bring together circus enthusiasts of all ages and levels. They have taken place in Big Tops and Indoor venues on 5 occasions, and have typically attracted participant audiences at capacity volumes. The Circadium format has been given accolades by the UK circus community as being of immense importance. Circadia allow for a large gathering of skills in a small place, and a chance for cross-pollination of ideas and skills transfer to take place. Opportunities for this are rare, when the sector of circus is small, dilute and disparate.
Each project typically takes place as a partnership between a venue, an event and the circus, and the gatherings draw participants from wide across the country, all people keen to learn and share. Let’s Circus has trained many in the event management and delivery of large volunteer-lead sharing events. This has seen the North East of England become a hotspot of energy and experience at UK partnerships such as Juggling Conventions and the movement of youth circus now burgeoning as CircusWorks. In 2015 Let’s Circus began the development of a large scale training festival ‘Circus. In a Field! The UK Circus Gathering’. The ambition of which is to develop an internationally recognised shared training and gathering for the circus community. At this event ‘Circadium’ became the venue name for our 32m round big top, the home of over 100 circus folk for the intensive week of training.
